More Fusible Applique' this time with Amy Butler's Midwest Modern Collection from Rowan

I purchased some Amy Butler Fabrics from my local quilt shop. It's been laying around for a little while, waiting for inspiration to strike . . .

Today, I took the Adobe Illustrator image that I had designed for Pam Ring (Previous post) and recolored it to work with the Amy Butler's Midwest Modern Collection from Rowan. This time I used a fusible, printable fabric from Avery, called Personal Creations Printable Fabric. It's heavier than the Printed Treasures I used earlier which is fine for a bag. Also, the color was much more vivid!

The teal dots you see are decorative stitches from my sewing machine.

Wine/Beverage Tote in Sandra Banava's Color Theory from Robert Kaufman

Need a quick summer project idea? Well, here is a great one.
For years my sister-in-law has been using the Original Scrap-bag™ that I gave her for a wine/beverage tote. So I thought I'd try it out . . . and guess what it works great!

This Original Scrap-bags™ tote can accommodate two or three wine or beverage bottles! The Scrap-bags™ hardboard bottom supports them perfectly.

If you carry three bottles, wrap the center bottle with a terry towel to prevent the bottles clinking together. If you are carrying two bottles you can just fold the towel and place it in between the two, then snap the snap and your bottle are protected from each other and you won't even see them.

Deviations from the pattern: 1) I eliminated the interior pockets because I thought the bottles might catch on them when inserting them into the bag. 2) I added two large exterior pockets made from strips of coordinating fabrics.

Bag above shows the large exterior pocket on the front of the bag.

Yes, there are two bottles in the bag above!

The fabrics used in this bag are Sandra Banava's Color Theory from Robert Kaufman. Because this bag was a collaborative effort between Sandra and myself and I knew I would be sending the bag to her after photography, I decided to have a little fun with the back pocket. I played with a combination of selvages from her fabrics and the Scrap-bags™ woven label in addition to the strip pieced pocket.

Remember: "Let our patterns be the canvas for your creativity!"

Below you will find another simple detail. Hand quilted stitching along the top edge of the bag and the pocket top. It only takes a few minutes to do . . . but adds something special to the bag.

Fabric ID:
Blue = Color Theory 6882 Jewel - Robert Kaufman
White = Color Theory 6884 Jewel - Robert Kaufman
Red = Color Theory 6883 Jewel - Robert Kaufman

Sandra invites you to visit her Flicker Album or send her an email.

And YES, you can get this done tote bag sewn by the 4th of July! ; )

Playing with Paintstiks

Last month at my Colorful Quilts & Textiles class we played with Paintstiks! This is a fun and easy technique. I was the door prize winner and received the Painstiks on Fabric book shown below. This is a great reference book by Shelley Stokes. Below are the results of some of my playing with Paintsticks for the first time! I mostly used my own rubber stamps but also woven straw hotpads (upper left) and purchased rubbing plates.

I wanted to use some of my leftover
On the Breeze fabrics but found it was too busy to show off the paint stick technique. So I overdyed the fabric in blue.

I then did some rubbings in a few different colors using different rubbing plates.

Because I knew I wanted to use the Court house block for a pocket, I needed a light and dark version of this fabric. The dark version came from strips of the overdyed fabric and the light strips came from using the back side of the original fabric. I pieced them around a square featuring the paintstik image. Bag pattern is: The Original Scrap-bag™ Item #201 OSBP

I used a paintstik image only for the back pocket below.

Here's a close up of the overdyed, paintstik pocket.

There are may ways to use these paint sticks, this is just one technique. It easy and fun and not too messy either. Have fun and create something unexpected!
