The Apple Doesn't Fall Far From the Tree!

Do you remember last month I introduced you to a young quilter named Brittany Anderson? Here's the post in case you missed it.    Well, this month at quilt club she and her Mom Lorie brought a mother-daughter show and tell.

I asked Lorie how it was that they both made the same quilt. Here is her reply, "Funny story. Last summer at the august cottage retreat we visited the Hazelhurst [WI] quilt store, after walking through the Minocqua quilt show. I bought the pattern because I liked the pink with the brown and also picked up some civil war prints to make the quilt. I took it home and set it aside after washing the fabrics and then not wanting to cut them, they went into the stash.

Months later Brittany went up north to see Sam and stopped in at the Hazelhurst Quilt store. I guess after making Sam a quilt for Christmas, and her bird quilt during winter break, she needed another project. She bought the SAME Pattern, and one fat quarter to make it, knowing she could pick out more fabrics at home.

She was so excited to show me what she had purchased it was funny when I showed her the same pattern in my stash. She wanted to start it right away. So we took all the civil war prints out we could find and each picked out fabric to make our own. I wanted mine to look like the pattern with pinks and browns and to be colonial period looking so I used muslin for the backing and hand quilted.  Brittany used civil war prints in the blues and gray and browns with machine quilting with a larger stitch to appear hand quilted vintage. Both are very different looking. We appliquéd the birds and stars with hand dyed Valdani threads.

I think we had fun creating our own little quilts. I am in the process of making the doll."

Lorie and Brittany, thanks again for sharing your work with us. You are both an inspiration!

What's that? Down at their feet? No, it's not flooring tile. It's a project that our quilt club group is doing together. I will have a post all about it in the future . . . so stay tuned!

PS. Below is the pattern they used!

I am pleased to introduce a new young quilter, meet Brittany Anderson.

Brittany is 21 and will be graduating from collage in May, 2011. She is the daughter of Lorie Anderson. (Lorie is in my quilt club and craft club groups - I featured her T-shirt quilt on an earlier post) Brittany brought this quilt along to quilt club a few weeks ago and I thought it was terrific for a newbie quilter. I hope you agree. You can read the interview below. Enjoy!

How long have you been quilting?
I have been making my own quilts for 3 months now, I first made a quilt for my boyfriend for Christmas, it was a simple 10" x 10" block quilt, but I have been helping my mom for about 4 years now.

What made you want to start quilting?
I wanted to start quilting because my mom does it and I thought it would be easy to start since she has a wide selection of fabrics and patterns. I also love being able to make something for someone else that can be used over and over.

Earliest quilt memory?
When I was about 8 my grandma made me a purple quilt for my twin bed. It is big blocks with petals of all different colors and in the center of each is brown circle that is hand stitched and filled with stuffing to make it raise from the quilt.  (Its hard to explain but I hope you get the picture)

What part of quilting do you enjoy the most?  Like least?
I enjoy picking out the colors for a quilt while I dont really like cutting the fabric.

Do you have a favorite style or technique?
Appliqué is pretty fun but I like to explore and try new things with patterns my mom already has to make it one of a kind.

My dad owns a 6 head embroidery machine that we used for the quilting. Him and I set up a circle design with lines going through it to allow all the appliquéd pieces to be stitched down, instead of going around each piece. We had to hoop up and sew each of the nine circles separately because the hoops are only 20 inches square. The top thread is a turquoise and we made our own pink bobbin for the back.

"Birdie Big Blocks" is the pattern by Barbara Brandeburg
Her website is www.barbarabrandeburg.typepad.com

Brittany thanks so much for sharing your quilt with me and allowing me to share it with my readers. Wishing you a long, happy, sewing life!

Colors for Quilts - Everyone Has There Own Personal Color Palette

This has happened to me before. Last time I was carrying around a piece of paper with paint chips taped on it. I was contemplating painting my walls with the chip colors. I threw it on the counter one day when I was digging through my purse looking for something else. The chips landed near a kitchen pot holder. Low and behold all of the seven colors of the paint chips were in that pot holder! I guess I really liked those colors then.

Now, it looks like my personal palette are these colors.

The first photo (below) is of a table runner I made from my Forget Me Not quilt pattern. I chose the fabrics from a local quilt shop (The Noble Quilter in Elk River, MN). She featured the pattern and runner in her shop for over a year.  I recently received it back. When I opened the box I put the runner on the dining room table and . . . Viola - It matched the french table cloth I had purchased (because I loved it so much), almost perfectly! I was stunned, even the odd blue/green color was in both pieces.

Do you know what your personal color palette is? Now that you are aware that you probably do have one, what is it? See you you can figure it out . . . we'd all love to know.  Personally I am wondering when mine changed, my last one had no blue or orange. Instead, greens, red, and neutrals.   Hmmmm.  Interesting, perhaps a color psychologist would know . . .  is there such a person?

PS. The  Forget Me Not quilt pattern is available from your local quilt or fabric shop. If you can't find it there you can order it online in both a printed-mail it or downloadable format.

From My Quilt Collection - Vintage Yo Yo Quilt

I thought I'd share one of the quilts that I live with everyday. This one lives happily on the back of what I call my "Mama Bear Mission Rocker". (Mama Bear because it's not too big and it's not too small.) I purchased this quilt about 8 or 9 years ago from a quilt shop in Indiana. I hope you enjoy the photos.

Photo: This is the backing of the Yo Yo Quilt. Any idea on the age, based on this fabric?

What We Did with Winnie's Mother's Fabric Scraps.

Back in March of '08 I posted about a quilt top that I had made from fabric scraps that I had purchased at my neighbors estate sale.
You can read that post here . . .

Well, the other night at the art quilt opening (see previous post), Winnie Johnson brought the finished quilt in to show me and now I'd like to share it with you. Photo above holding the quilt left to right: Winnie Johnson, Myself, and Loretta Stacy.

In a nut shell, I purchased vintage fabrics from Winnie many years ago, they were her mother's scraps. I pieced the quilt top using the vintage fabrics for the hand pieced hexagon flowers and machine appliqued them to newer fabrics from my stash. When the top was finished I sent it to Winnie. She had it quilted by Loretta and finished it herself.

Below, Winnie is showing Loretta the documentation text she added to the edge of the quilt. It reads: "Grandmother's Flower Garden Variation...Pieced by Jamie Kalvestran Using Ruth Aanerud's Scraps...Quilted by Loretta Stacy...Finished by Winnie Johnson."

I asked Winnie how many of the fabrics she remembered from her childhood. It was amazing how many memories it brought back. Even her husband Russ pointed out a fabric that had been formerly a pair of culottes that Winnie wore when they were first dating! How cool is that!

And even though I had never met Ruth, (Winnie's mother) in person, I hope she is looking down from above, smiling and nodding her approval of what we did with her scraps!

Russ & Winnie Johnson operate Woodland Cottage a Textile and Craft Retreat in Elk River MN, read more about Woodland Cottage here.

Loretta Stacy owns The Needle's Eye a Longarm Quilting Business, in Princeton, MN. You may email Loretta here.
